Mustard gas ‘likely used’ in suspected Islamic State attack in Syria

Fears grow over Isis chemical warfare capability as doctors find patients from frontline town of Marea have symptoms indicating exposure to toxic agent

Testimony from doctors and experts has added weight to claims that civilians in a town near the northern Syrian city of Aleppo were the victims of an Islamic State attack involving a chemical agent that was most likely mustard gas.

Doctors said the patients, who come from the town of Marea, suffered from skin lesions, respiratory problems and redness in the eyes following a barrage of attacks on Friday. The symptoms were were highly suggestive of exposure to a chemical agent.

The evidence raises the prospect, denied by the Pentagon, that Isis has gained access to chemical stockpiles from Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s regime thought to have been destroyed or degraded. A 2013 accord, brokered by Russia, took Assad’s declared chemicals out of Syria in an 11th-hour move to avert US bombing.

Palestinians ordered to pay $10m to terror victims while appealing lawsuit

Authorities found liable in lawsuit over Americans killed in terrorist attacks must pay additional $ 1m monthly payment while case is on appeal

Palestinian authorities found liable in a high-profile lawsuit over Americans killed in terrorist attacks must pay $ 10m in cash – and an additional $ 1m monthly payment while the case is on appeal – to secure the hundreds of millions awarded by a jury, a US judge said on Monday.

In ordering the security payment, Manhattan federal Judge George B Daniels said he had given significant thought to a motion filed this month by the US State Department, which intervened in the case via the Department of Justice to argue a high bond could threaten the stability of the region by straining the cash-strapped Palestinians.

Police continue to question gunman after French interior minister says intelligence services had flagged up suspect’s links to radical Islam

French investigators are continuing to question the suspected jihadi gunman who opened fire on a packed Amsterdam-to-Paris train after it emerged that he had been flagged by intelligence services in at least four European countries and had drug convictions in Spain. Ayoub El-Khazzani, 25, a Moroccan national, opened fire with a Kalashnikov on the high-speed Thalys train on Friday, but was wrestled to the floor by three American passengers, aided by a British man.

Study of Holocaust survivors finds trauma passed on to children’s genes

New finding is first example in humans of the theory of epigenetic inheritance: the idea that environmental factors can affect the genes of your children

Genetic changes stemming from the trauma suffered by Holocaust survivors are capable of being passed on to their children, the clearest sign yet that one person’s life experience can affect subsequent generations.

The conclusion from a research team at New York’s Mount Sinai hospital led by Rachel Yehuda stems from the genetic study of 32 Jewish men and women who had either been interned in a Nazi concentration camp, witnessed or experienced torture or who had had to hide during the second world war.
