Death of 18-month-old in arson attack heightens tensions in West Bank

Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu condemns attack on Palestinian family, with Mahmoud Abbas denouncing it as a war crime

The slumbering Dawabsheh family never stood a chance when a pair of arsonists crept into their home in a village in the West Bank in the early hours of Friday. A smashed window, a flaming molotov cocktail, a whoosh of fire and piercing screams followed.

Within minutes, the parents had crawled from the house with life-threatening third degree burns covering most of their bodies. Inside, four-year-old Ahmad was shrieking in fear and pain; his infant brother, Ali, just 18 months old, was dead or dying, his body burned beyond recognition.

MH370: aircraft debris flown to France for analysis

Aviation experts will try to verify if, as seems increasingly likely, wing section came from missing plane that disappeared last year with 239 people on board

Experts will seek to verify if the part came from the missing plane, but expectations are high after Malaysia’s prime minister said on Thursday that the wreckage was “very likely” to have come from a Boeing 777, the same model as the ill-fated flight.

Turkey urged at Nato meeting not to abandon Kurdish peace process

President Erdoğan is pushed to adopt proportionate military response hours after he said it was impossible to continue process

The Turkish government has been pressed at a special Nato meeting to adopt a proportionate response towards Kurdish militants and not abandon the increasingly fragile peace process.

The Nato conference, held on Tuesday at the request of Turkey, came only hours after Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish president, said he could not continue a peace process with Kurdish militants and urged parliament to strip politicians with links to “terrorist groups” of their immunity from prosecution.

Turkey sends in jets as Syria’s agony spills over every border

Turkish air strikes in Syria last week signalled a new phase in a conflict that has left its bloody mark on every country in the region. But will the Turks now agree to US demands to cease all clandestine dealings with Islamic State?

When US special forces raided the compound of an Islamic State leader in eastern Syria in May, they made sure not to tell the neighbours.

The target of that raid, the first of its kind since US jets returned to the skies over Iraq last August, was an Isis official responsible for oil smuggling, named Abu Sayyaf. He was almost unheard of outside the upper echelons of the terror group, but he was well known to Turkey. From mid-2013, the Tunisian fighter had been responsible for smuggling oil from Syria’s eastern fields, which the group had by then commandeered. Black market oil quickly became the main driver of Isis revenues – and Turkish buyers were its main clients.

Greece edges closer to third bailout as it formally requests IMF help

Finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos writes to IMF head Christine Lagarde seeking new loan but sources say ‘logistical problems’ are delaying talks

Greece has taken a step closer to a huge third international bailout by formally requesting help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but sources said “logistical problems” were delaying the start of talks in Athens.

The Greek government, which is seeking a three-year bailout worth up to €86bn (£60bn) to avert financial meltdown and a chaotic exit from the eurozone, had initially planned to go without fresh help from the IMF as it considers the agency too wedded to draconian austerity measures.

On the Aegean island that runs on cash, time is running out

Agios Efstratios has only three shops and two restaurants, but tourists loved its spectacular beaches. Now locals face a nine-hour ferry trip to get money, and the visitors aren’t coming

Agios Efstratios is so remote, so forgotten by the banks, the government and swaths of the modern world that the mobile phone network can’t process data, there isn’t a single ATM or credit-card machine on the island, and it calls up a blank on modern travel websites such as TripAdvisor.

Before Greece was plunged into financial chaos, residents of this tranquil outpost in the northern Aegean managed fine in a virtual time-warp. They did their banking at the post office and the few dozen rooms to rent were booked out every summer with people who had heard – by word of mouth – of its spectacular empty beaches, clear seas and fresh seafood the old-fashioned way.

Alexis Tsipras reshuffles cabinet to get rid of bailout dissidents

Greek prime minister’s shakeup marks decisive split from Syriza MPs who voted against EU and IMF’s draconian deal terms

The Greek prime minister has sought to rid his government of hardline leftists who oppose further austerity, reshuffling his cabinet barely 48 hours after dissidents broke ranks over a draconian bailout deal for the debt-stricken country.

In a move aimed squarely at displaying his determination to forge ahead with spending cuts and reforms, Alexis Tsipras replaced leading government ministers. The shakeup marked a decisive split from militants in his radical left Syriza party who had voted against tough measures demanded in return for rescue funds from the EU and IMF.

Iran nuclear deal moves to battleground of US Congress

Republican and Democratic hawks could derail historic agreement that will grant relief from sanctions in return for curbs on Iran’s nuclear programme

The battle over the Iran nuclear agreement is set to move to Washington as the Obama administration begins a three-month campaign to stop the hard-won deal being derailed by congressional Republicans.

The deal – reached in a Vienna hotel early on Tuesday morning after prolonged talks between foreign ministers – binds Iran, the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China to a series of undertakings stretching over many years. Iran will dismantle much of its nuclear infrastructure, while the UN, US and European Union will remove a wall of sanctions built around Iran over the last nine years.
